How to Tune a Guitar

Welcome back my fellow talented guitarists!
Today we’re going to learn how to tune a guitar. It looks simple but believe me some people can’t do it, although they can play the guitar quite well. Don’t be one of them, or you will be depending on somebody else for the rest of your life when your guitar needs some fine tuning.

You have to tune your guitar every time you want to play it. Some guitars, for example the low quality ones, tend to go out of tune more often than the good ones. Playing an out of tune guitar is really hard because every single note you pick will sound terrible. Some acts of guitar playing such as applying bending or popping techniques can also change your tuning so please check your guitar tuning during practice or playing. Train your ears to judge whether your guitar is out of tone or not. This seems difficult but actually not at all because you are lucky we live in this computer era where tuning guitar can be done with the help of your computer. You will find that guitar tuning is as easy as finding this Beginner Guitar Lessons blog, that’s my promise.

OK, enough said. Here is the standard guitar setting:
Look at your guitar strings. They are numbered from 1 to 6 where string #1 is the thinnest one.  Whilst both string #1 and #6 represent E note, actually string #1 is 2 octaves higher than string #6.

Now the question is: How to tune a guitar if we don’t have something to refer to? Don’t worry; use this guitar tuner I have provided here:

Most of you probably will have difficulty to decide whether the pitch is already matched with the tuner. My advice is always go from low tension and slowly increase it by turning the peg while at the same time compare the pitch to the guitar tuner frequency.

The more you do this tuning practice the better memory your ears will have. After some practices you will be able to tell confidently that your first string is in tune without the help of guitar tuner. Other strings will just need to refer to this first string for complete tuning.

How to tune a guitar if your ears fail to tell the difference? Thanks to some genius people out there, you can find a lot of different gadgets available for free. Drop me your e-mail address and I’ll be happy to send it to you  for free. You will need a microphone connected to your PC.

OK guys, hope this page helps you.
